"You've seen Happy Gilmore how many times and you've never seen The Godfather?!?!"
I have a love of movies. I remember seeing Star Wars when I was 4 and being mesmerized by the whole experience and was forever hooked to the artform.
By the time I hit my 30s I started realizing that there were definitive gaps in the films I had seen. I started getting yelled at by friends for the classics I hadn’t seen.
I decided to make a list of 40 films to see before I turned 40. I was successful in making the list but only got to 1 movie on the list before the clock struck Four-Ooooooh (The Shining, if you were wondering).
So now in my mid-fourties I’ve set about the same task of seeing 50 ‘classics’ before 50. This site will detail my experiences with those 50 plus more that have already been added since making the list and occasionally there will be 2nd looks at classics/favorites already viewed.
THE LIST (ALPHABETICAL ORDER)
BONNIE AND CLYDE
DO THE RIGHT THING
DOG DAY AFTERNOON
GOOD WILL HUNTING
KING OF COMEDY
MAN ON WIRE
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
THE USUAL SUSPECTS
WHEN WE WERE KINGS
I imagine after reading the list, your first thought is, "OMG! I can't believe you haven't seen film 'x'." To which my reply would be, "I knooooow. That's what this exercise is about! To shut up the haters and appreciate some fine cinema."
These films were culled using AFI's Top 100, unending peer pressure, social influence, and a couple are 'because I feel like it' choices. There are honorable mentions and I reserve the right to 'Freebird Rules' those in depending on my mood.
Without giving away my actual birth date, I figure I have to average about 1 of these a month before the clock strikes 50. Seems easy, right? Especially since I used to average close to 50 of these a year in my teens and 20s. Unfortunately life makes a mess of everyone's plans.
With all due respect to Master Yoda, there is try...
